In slot machines, a player inserts cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, paper tickets with barcodes, and then activates the machine by pulling a handle or pushing a button (either physical or on a touchscreen). The reels spin and stop to rearrange symbols. If a winning combination is lined up, the machine pays out credits according to the pay table. Typically, winning lines run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Symbols vary by machine, but classic symbols include bells, stylized lucky sevens, card suits, and various pictured fruits. Many slot games have a theme, and bonus features align with the theme.
Previous studies have shown that players enjoy slot games for a variety of reasons. Despite the negative psychological consequences of gambling, many players enjoy the thrill of winning and the anticipation of future wins. However, arousal does not explain all aspects of enjoyment, as players report that they also enjoy the relaxation and distraction provided by slot play. The current study combines two measures of reward reactivity (PRP and force as a function of win size) with dark flow to show that the latter contributes to slots enjoyment beyond arousal.
