The Basics of Poker

If you’ve never played poker before, you’re missing out! This card game is a family of games where players wager money on the best hand. Each hand has a ranking based on the game rules. These rankings are similar to those found in chess. The purpose of the ranking is to determine which player has the best hand. You can also find poker rankings online. However, before you play poker, you should learn what these rankings are.

Poker

The first thing you should know about poker is the basics. The most important thing to remember about the game is that you need chips to play. In most cases, you’ll need to supply them if you have seven or more players. Each chip has a value. A white chip is worth five cents, while a red chip is worth ten or twenty or fifty cents. Then, each player purchases chips to “buy in,” which is generally the same amount as their own bet.

The poker cards are ranked from A (high) to J (low). If the top three players have the highest hand, they win. The lowest hand, or the flop, wins. The next highest hand wins. The players in the game are called ‘raisers’. These players place their chips into the pot, which is the winning hand. Unless someone raises, they are out. If a player is ahead in the game, the player with the highest hand wins the pot.
