Poker Glossary

There are many different variants of the game, and each has its own rules and strategies. The most common versions are cash games and tournaments.

Chips (Poker Chips): These are small rectangular pieces of plastic or metal that are used to place bets on the poker table. They come in a variety of colors and are usually assigned values before the start of the game.

Action:

A player’s options in a poker game are to bet, raise, call, or fold. To call means to match a previous wager on the current betting round, and to raise means to add another bet to the pot.

Pair:

A pair of cards in a poker game is any two distinct pairs, like a three of a kind or two fives. The highest pair breaks ties and wins the pot if there are no other high pairs, or a full house (three of a kind and one pair).

Flush:

A flush in poker is any five cards of the same suit that do not have a pair of them. The lowest possible flush is seven-five-four-three in two or more suits, but sometimes a single ace may be treated as the lowest card and make 6-4-3-2-A the lowest hand.
